Hippuris vulgaris, commonly known as mare's tail, is a distinctive native aquatic plant with upright, jointed stems densely arranged with narrow, whorled leaves, giving it a strong vertical and architectural presence in ponds and still water. Its fresh green colour and rigid form create contrast against softer aquatic plants, making it easy to recognise and visually striking.
This species has excellent ecological value, acting as an effective oxygenator while providing shelter for aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, and fish. Its small, inconspicuous flowers are of little ornamental value, but the plant plays an important role in maintaining water quality and supporting healthy pond ecosystems.
