Athyrium niponicum 'Ursula's Red', commonly known as Japanese painted fern, is an evergreen fern with strikingly coloured fronds that emerge reddish-bronze before maturing to a mix of deep red, silver, and green tones. Its finely divided, arching foliage forms a low, spreading mound, adding dramatic colour and texture to shaded garden areas.
Although non-flowering, this fern provides shelter for small invertebrates and contributes to woodland garden biodiversity. Its low-maintenance habit and vivid foliage make it ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and underplanting beneath trees and shrubs.
